SKC Under 13s Gold-37 vs XC Unders 13s-0:12th May at Burke Road South Reserve
After a 9 o’clock kick off on a very cold winter morning with the fog clearing St Kevin’s Under 13 Gold came looking for a fighting performance, after last week’s loss.
After a run in the first five minutes that came despairingly close to the line by captain Oliver Roberts and some excellent pressure, Oliver went over the line off the back of a scrum. Then seven minutes later after some beautiful passing from halfback Michael Perks, Felix Mason danced his way to the line, stepping everyone in his way.
Another set of passing saw Jordan Lloyd go over the line to see us leading 15-nil with 4 minutes remaining in the half. Hard tackling by Joshua Balia ensured a five metre scrum with the pressure on Xavier again and Oliver went over for his 2nd try. Score of 20-0 at Half Time.
The 2nd half began with SKC forwards putting an increasingly heavy amount of pressure on the Xavier’s forward pack, and a number of phases saw us get close to the line. Michael Perks span it out wide to Felix who once again showed his footwork and scored. With 9 minutes left, SKC kept the intensity coming as Oliver once again stole the ball of the opposing halfback and just hit the line. With only a few minutes left Jordan Lloyd ran over securing the victory, but to Xavier’s credit, they had some excellent runaways, only to be thwarted by the try saving tackling from Felix, Nathan Mitchener and Josh Balia. After last week’s shaky game this was a great start to the season.
