SKC 2nd XV vs. Xavier College II
Inspired during the week by a theatrical allegory, performed by the members of our fellow community, the troops of the second fifteen prepared to showcase their talent, on their own stage. A far cry from the warmth of the Ruby Tout Theatre, the rugby oval, saturated by welcome rain, provided an ideal setting for St Kevin’s third victory for the season.
Starting well, as always, St Kevin’s managed to ‘occupy’ enemy territory with the forwards much toil resulting in multiple scoring opportunities, however, to Xavier’s credit, their front line held strong, however once St Kevin’s were given a sniff, hard work was finally rewarded with a Jeremy Corby try; following a quick tap from a penalty.
The backs were given their cue, following a Xavier fight back, when from neutral ground just within our own half, sloppy lineout ball was cleaned up and defence lured in majestically with siren like poise by the inside back’s, finally James Musty delivering a perfectly timed pass to put Edward Ung into a hole, resulting in a well executed team try.
Despite silky skills in harsh, unforgiving conditions, the crux of the performance was based on solid defence by all fifteen. Forwards were tackling, rucking and mauling ruthlessly (Thomas Appleby’s try saving tackle a standout), while the backs led by James Musty and Shaun Bree-Killingbeck’s rib tickling defence ensuring St Kevin’s dominance.
Despite a somewhat sinusoidal performance St Kevin’s managed to scrape away with a gutsy two point victory (17-15) Shaun Bree-Killingbeck‘s late second half try sealing the victory.
STATSTries: Corby, Ung, Bree-Killingbeck
Tries: Corby, Ung, Bree-KillingbeckCorby, Ung, Bree-Killingbeck Conversions: AltmanThe game showcased glimpses of brilliant team play and the result quite favourable, however this win only showcased a minute quantity of the talent hidden within the second fifteen. This solid start to the season needs to be capitalised, and advancing our plight starts at training on Tuesday afternoon.
