Round 6: SKC 2nd XV vs MGS
Monday, June 18th, 2007At the fulcrum of enterprising week in St Kevin’s rugby the second fifteen were morally obligated to perform to their capabilities in front of a large crowd containing rugby royalty such as Mark Ella. The match indeed showcased a great display of running rugby, brutal defence and enterprising team play.
Commencing the game passionately and aggressively, St Kevin’s dominated early proceedings with some massive hits on their opposition giving us psychological ascendancy from the outset. Despite an outstanding defensive effort, one lapse in concentration allowed Melbourne Grammar to score first. Fuelled with a burning desire to hit back, St Kevin’s proceeded to do so, through a massive run by Jeremy Corby, and simple hands by the backs, culminating with a Ryan Harwood try. Simple play’s with good support and precise execution again resulted in one more try before the half was through.
The second half held a different tone to the first with a primarily defensive effort overshadowing the running rugby refracted through the first half. Gutsy defence from forwards and backs alike denied MGS from scoring on several occasions, and with our opposition having 80% of the ball in the second half, only conceding one try is a commendable defensive effort by all parties. Good strategic kicking and set plays by the backs, led by Shaun Bree-Killingbeck and James Musty, allowed St Kevin’s to cross for two more tries.
A good gutsy win by the team (22-10) gives us a good platform to launch into top of the table Scotch College next round following the break and then, if all goes well, the finals.Matheesha Herath
