QLD tour
Last Monday St Kevins senior rugby travelled to Queensland for the Southport gold coast tournament. The tour proved to be a great success and a lot of fun, bringing the team together and developing stronger relationships.
The fist day of games was promising with the 1sts winning both games against two new Zealand sides.
We spent our first rest day at surfer’s paradise, where we swam in the very inviting water and played touch footy on the beach. The highlight of the day had to be posing with the very friendly meter maids.
The second day of games started off a lot tougher than the first. The boys faced Nailand College, a very physical and hard New Zealand side. It was our first really testing game of the season and ending proving too depleting for the boys, after losing by a point in the dying seconds, courtesy of Nailands 5/8’s drop goal. The following game against a Brisbane club side was quite the contrast, with the green gold and blue dominating the game.
Our second rest day was spent with a recovery pool session at Wet and Wild where we all had a ball. However things weren’t as enjoyable for Lei Gray, who after heading down the twister for his first ride said “I thought this was a fun park, theres no fun here, this is a Scary park.”
Not only did we all have a lot of fun but we also developed our rugby. The seconds faced several, skilful and large New Zealand sides that proved too good. But they developed throughout the tour, all aiming up and playing quality rugby, winning there last game convincingly.
The last day of tour was finals day, where we played The Southport School Development squad. We were put under pressure early on, similar to the Nailand game, with Southport scoring the first try and defending strongly. However we backed ourselves, didn’t panic and stuck to our game plan. In the end winning the game to go into the final.
Facing Queen Charlotte’s haka before the game we were fired up for the game. The final proved a display of our development over the tour. The boys playing disciplined, positive and structured rugby to win the final 29 – 0.
I would like to thank the coaches/managers of the tournament, Mr Pain, Mr Hutchinson and Mr Davies for all of the time they spent organising the event and their time during the tour.
