2nd XV narrowly defeat GGS
Early Saturday morning saw an up and coming St. Kevins 2nd fifteen take on a ambitious GGS squad. With some new arrivals to the team this week, such as Stuart Engledow, Sean-Bree Killingbeck and Eddie Ung, we were looking foward to a hard hit out against our fellow APS competitors.
St. Kevins began the game in an intense and aggressive fashion as GGS played the first fifteen minutes defending their own half, as strong defence in the foward pack from Charles ‘intense’ Randles and Jesse- Fisher Stone saw GGS tentative early. However due to a lack of continuity in the back line and several failed opputunities to go over the try line, St. Kevins were unable to put on any scoreboard pressure early.
However, some great blind side play from Jerome White, Sean Bree-Killingbeck and Jehan Abeysekera saw Skevs put on their first try in the left hand corner toward the end of the first half. The 2nd fifteen started the second half in disorderly fashion, as a lack of organisation in defence saw GGS come up with an early converted try. Determined to get back in the game, the team aimed up, as strong running from speedstar Stuey Engledow and Eddie Ung saw Skevs draw back the GGS lead and take control of the game, this was later evidenced by an Engledow try. Foward intensity was undeniable, as great pick and drive play from James Steeth and Charles Randles saw Skevs fly over the line as a result of simple back play.
Despite the teams great determination and dominance, our concentration was lacking towards the final minutes of the game, letting through another GGS try. Regardless of some restraint from GGS, SKC was able to pull off a scrappy win, as some of our technical play let us down and cost us vital points, but a win is a win and we are looking foward to next week against Xavier.
Best Players: Jehan Abeysekera, Charles Randles and Stuart Engledow
