First XV overrun Geelong Grammar on May 10
Being President’s Day, Saturday May 10 was a big occasion on the St Kevins rugby calendar and it was fitting that Skevs came away with a win.
Leading into the game the goal was to be intense and to keep discipline. We started the game well coming out and putting phases together, culminating with a try to Jack Ryan in the corner. Another try saw St Kevins leading 10-0.
However, credit must be payed to Geelong who fought back and increased the pressure which led to us making mistakes. As a result Geelong scored a try. The rest of the first half proved to be somewhat disappointing as we failed to capitalize on our forward movement – but then again Geelong defended well.
Going into the second half the team needed to lift and show that we could finish off our opponents. We were able to do this with better ball running and intensity. The team was able to apply the pressure and the tries started to flow.
However when tiredness became apparent, it showed in the basics such as the catch-pass’ we started to drop. Instead of slowing the game down we forced ourselves into mistakes leading to at times sloppy rugby.
Whilst Adam Dole again showed himself to be an illusive second row runner, it doesn’t help that his hard work goes to waste by a clumsy scrum-half!
It was also great to see many players step up a notch in their performance from the previous week. Michael Kneebone showed everyone he is a player to watch. With quick hands and pace to burn, he was able to look for work which ensured he wasn’t stuck on the wing all day. Mitch James also stepped up, ordering his backline around and supplying ball well with Jack Ryan showing how devastating a player he can be, punishing opposition mistakes.
The score line of 44 – 7 to Skevs a pleasing result.
