St. Kevin’s Year 9 Rugby had a thrilling win this weekend, but sadly only played one game. Due to injury and being unable to field a competitive team, the Green team was forced to forfeit their game against Xavier College. Instead, the Gold Team and reserves from the Green Team journeyed to Bullen, to take on Trinity College. Trinity College came into the game undefeated, having won against Melbourne Grammar and ready to take St. Kevin’s on.
The game started well and tough, and it was clear we would have to work hard to pull the win off. Within a few seconds our work at training would be put to the test, with the first scrum of the match. After working on our scrums on Thursday and learning from the tough Melbourne Grammar scrum we were determined to dominate the scrums, which we promptly did. From there on in we had the upper hand, and with quick running off our wings Miguel Jaanz and Andrew Taylor we were able to score quickly. St. Kevin’s dominated the rest of the half, keeping the opposition scoreless.
With the start of the second half and fresh legs off the bench, we were ready to improve on the last half and expand our lead. Focusing on getting over the rucks and cleaning out we hit hard. But a quick break from Trinity allowed them to score and we swore that would be their last. We worked hard and it paid off breaking through Trinity and scoring through our forwards, as well as our backs. A great game from St. Kevin’s Year 9 Rugby and we plan to improve on this when we return to Rugby next term.
