Skevies Firsts Finish the Season Undefeated
Saturday August 2 saw St.Kevin’s play Brighton Grammar at Burke Road South. With the grand final in a week’s time the match was seen as a solid build up in preparation for Scotch College.
We entered the match after some solid training work during the week. From kick-off Skevies built up momentum through great direction offered by Mitch James. This resulted in an early score in what became a very physical encounter. Throughout the first half we moved from phase to phase with confidence as the game turned into one of St Kevin’s better performances for the year. Training had obviously worked when it came down to the set piece; scrums never went back and line outs were executed with precision and accuracy. During the previous week hours had been spent on our ruck defence and when it came down to it, it all came together. Coming into the second half St Kevin’s were eager to build on our first half which was made possible with great kicking from Shaun Bree at the back and some great running lines from Ross Arnold showing that he isn’t just a great defender. St Kevin’s were able to finish the game winning 28-5.
Coming into the final there are certain aspects of the game that need to be fine tuned, such as our discipline in own half. We were fortunate Brighton did not convert their penalty although we may not be so lucky next week, This is especially vital as it has been seen in recent finals that any points count. We also need to perfect the ruck defence that let us down once on the try line. Coming out of the game we can build on this great performance as we all look forward to the grand final.
Whatever the result the team has worked hard and it is a great accomplishment to make a grand final, although it would be nice to have a drink out of the cup…… touch wood.
